About pfc-9

Information about the pfc-9 data set.

Summary

The data set contains large-scale simultaneous recordings from medial prefrontal cortex and amygdala in sleeping and freely-behaving rats. The data were used to provide support for an alternative ('brain-based') theoretical framework of brain function. Indeed, cell assemblies have generally been studied in relation to specific stimuli or actions ('representational' framework), but this approach does not readily extend to more abstract constructs. The brain-based approach proposes to assess cell assemblies without making reference to external variables, and instead focus on internal brain processes — by defining assemblies by their endogenous ability to effectively elicit specific responses in downstream (‘reader’) neurons. This data set and the accompanying manuscript support cell assemblies as an endogenous mechanism for brain function.

Format of the data

The open data format is described in Hazan et al. (2006) and on our NeuroSuite website (L. Hazan, http://neurosuite.sourceforge.net). Data can be readily loaded in Matlab using our free (GPL-licensed) Freely Moving Animal Toolbox (FMAToolbox, M. Zugaro, http://fmatoolbox.sourceforge.net), which also includes extensive documentation. More information about the data is given in the document linked to at the bottom of this page. Total data size is about 6 GB.

Conditions for usage of this data in publications

Please contact Sidney Wiener or Michaël Zugaro if you are planning to use these data for a publication in order to discuss potential authorship. In any case, if you publish any work using the data, please cite the publications above and the data set as follows, using the following:
