About hc-15
Summary
The data presented here are raw extracellular voltage recordings of spontaneous action potentials from cultured mouse hippocampal neurons, recorded with multi-electrode arrays. Each recording displays several examples of action potential propagation in single neurons. These are seen as near-coincident spikes among groups of co-active electrodes, which occur in stereotyped sequences, with typically sub-millisecond inter-electrode latencies. We refer to the entirety of these multi-electrode events as propagation signals. Propagation signals are useful because they confirm that spikes at constituent electrodes all arise from single identifiable neurons and thus are a unique source of ground truth in the extracellular record; spikes from single neurons can be isolated from all other detected spikes in the extracellular record, independently of spike sorting routines.
We used MEA Viewer software to visualize the two dimensional extent and inter-electrode latencies of individual propagation signals. MEA Viewer is visualization software for multi-channel electrophysiological data, with features specifically designed to visualize propagation signals, taking advantage of the ability to signal average these events. Details of the features embedded in MEA Viewer, including the ability to visualize propagation signals, can be found here:
