About hc-5

Information about the hc-5 data set.

The hc-5 data set contains recordings made using a silicon probe from three areas from a single rat that was performing different behavioral tasks.  The three regions recorded from are left and right hippocampal CA1 and right entorhinal cortex.  The tasks are a left/right alternate selection task, wheel running, and platform exploration.   The neural data was recorded on 125 channels. Included in the data set are the following items:

  • Weveforms of putative spikes extracted from original raw broadband data
  • LFPs (local field potentials)
  • Results of spike sorting
  • Information about the animal behavior during the experiment

Several publication based on some of the data are:

Internally generated cell assembly sequences in the rat hippocampus. Pastalkova E, Itskov V, Amarasingham A, Buzsáki G. Science. 2008 Sep 5;321(5894):1322-7

Theta oscillations provide temporal windows for local circuit computation in the entorhinal-hippocampal loop. Mizuseki K, Sirota A, Pastalkova E, Buzsáki G., Neuron. 2009 Oct 29;64(2):267-80.

Theta sequences are essential for internally generated hippocampal firing fields. Wang Y, Romani S, Lustig B, Leonardo A, Pastalkova E. Nat Neurosci. 2014 Dec 22. [Epub ahead of print]

Format of the data.

The format of the data is the same as for the hc-2 and hc-3 data sets (see links to documentation files at bottom of page).  In addition, most sessions contain a MATLAB file that has much of the data in a format that is easy to wok with in MATLAB.  Details of the data format are provided in documents listed at the bottom of this page.

How to cite the data

Publications created through usage of the data should cite at least one of the publication given above and also cite the data set in the following recommended format:

Pastalkova E, Wang Y, Mizuseki K, Buzsáki G. (2015)
Simultaneous extracellular recordings from left and right hippocampal areas CA1 and right entorhinal cortex from a rat performing a left / right alternation task and other behaviors.

The above citation uses a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) which is assigned to the data set.  The DOI was created using DataCite ( and the California Digital Library, "EZID" system (
