About pvc-4

Information about the data including cells, stimuli, format of the data.

Summary of the data

This data consists of single electrode recordings from V1 in awake behaving macaque monkeys who fixated at a central point on the screen, while stimuli were presented to the cell's receptive field. The data has been used by the Gallant lab to determine stimulus-response mapping functions.

More details on data collection can be found in:

David SV, Vinje WE and Gallant JL (2004). Natural stimulus statistics alter the receptive field structure of V1 neurons. Journal of Neuroscience 24, 6991-7006.

Format of the data

All data files (stimulus files, response files and a summary file --which contains metadata) are all stored in a format that can be read into Matlab, either directory (the summary file) or using Matlab functions which are supplied with the data set.  Details are given in file crcns-pvc4-readme.txt.  Total data size is about 1.7GB (compressed for downloading) and 5.3GB (uncompressed).

Restrictions

These data will only be made available to researchers who have demonstrated a valid University affiliation. Also, anyone who is given access to these data must affirm that they will not redistribute the data themselves.  In any publications derived from the data, we ask that you cite the following articles where these data appeared originally, and where the data acquisition protocols are presented in detail:

  1. Vinje, W.E. & Gallant, J.L. (2000). Sparse coding and decorrelation in primary visual cortex during natural vision. Science, 287, 1273-1276.

How to download the data

Read the restrictions (above).  If you believe that you have the requested qualifications and agree to abide by the restrictions, register on this site, then use the "Contact" link (upper right) to submit a request to obtain the data.  Please include the following:

  • Your full name.
  • University affiliation.
  • If a not a faculty member, include the name and email address of the faculty member you are working with.
  • The name of the dataset (pvc-4).
  • A short description of what you will be using the data for.
  • An statement affirming that you will not redistribute the data.

Upon approval (and not before) you will be able to download the data from:

https://portal.nersc.gov/project/crcns/download/pvc-4

using your CRCNS.org account.

Getting help using the data

If you have questions about using the data, please post them on the forum for using data sets or contact Jack Gallant (email address given in "CONDITIONS.txt" file included with the data set).

How to cite the data

In addition to the citation specified in the "Restrictions" section (above), if possible, publications created through usage of the data should cite the data set in the following recommended format:

David, Stephen V.; Vinje, William E.; Gallant, Jack L. (2009): Single electrode recordings from primary visual cortex. CRCNS.org.
http://dx.doi.org/10.6080/K0CC0XMD

The above citation uses a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) which is assigned to the data set.  The DOI was created using DataCite (www.datacite.org) and the California Digital Library, "EZID" system (n2t.net/ezid/).
